To help you plan for the best honeymoon in Iceland, filled with the most romantic spots, this article will give you all sorts of helpful tips and tricks, reveal the best times to visit the island, and what hidden gems are not to be missed.
Why Iceland is the Perfect Honeymoon Destination
“Why honeymoon in Iceland?” you may be wondering. So, let’s dig into why Iceland makes the perfect honeymoon spot:
Nature Setting the Scene for Romance
Iceland’s landscape feels like it truly is out of this world. With incredible waterfalls, black sand beaches, jaw-dropping volcanoes, black basalt cliffs covered in moss, lush green valleys… the list is endless. Whatever you are looking for, you’re bound to find it here in the Land of Fire and Ice.
And remember, depending on the season, you might even get to see the Northern Lights dancing above your head, or you can be the one dancing right through our incredible 24-hour Midnight Sun period. Nature has created the perfect setting for your romantic road trip.

Adventure and Romance - All Rolled Into One
Your Iceland honeymoon itinerary doesn’t need to be limited to just loved-up activities 24/7. Here, romance, relaxation, and adventure are all the order of the day! From relaxing in front of the fire in a cozy lodge and soaking in a hot spring to dog-sledding across the ice or going on a hike. There’s more than enough to keep you busy for daaays on end. And what’s more, by driving your own rental, you can do whatever you want at your own pace.
Warm Icelandic Hospitality
Iceland might have frigid weather, but this quality does not extend to its people. Icelanders are incredibly hospitable, which can help make your romantic getaways in Iceland all the more enjoyable. From trying unique local cuisine to finding hidden honeymoon gems or getting personal recommendations for romantic Iceland hotels – whatever it is, everyone will be more than happy to help you have a truly memorable experience.
Iceland is the Ultimate Place for Privacy and Connection
Unlike other locations where the natural beauty can sometimes feel overshadowed by the intense presence of myriads of tourists, you can easily choose more remote locations here in Iceland that will be just for you and your love. So, while many tourist hotspots turn into a match for who will manage to get the perfect shot or the better view, you don’t have to worry about that. You can focus on spending quality time with your new spouse, soaking in our incredible landscape and natural wonders.

But just remember, you won’t find public transport heading to these remote spots, so you’ll need to rent a car in Iceland if you want to get exclusive access to many of its hidden gems, including Iceland’s most romantic beaches and waterfalls.
Few places capture the magic of love and adventure like Iceland. Don’t just take our word for it! Here's what Emma and James, clients of Reykjavík Cars, had to say about their honeymoon on the island of fire and ice.
"We chose Iceland for our honeymoon and it was pure magic. From soaking in hot springs under the northern lights to driving through lava fields and waterfalls, every day felt like a new adventure. There’s simply no place on Earth more romantic and unforgettable than Iceland.” – Emma & James, UK
The Best Time of Year for a Honeymoon in Iceland
Planning your visit to Iceland largely depends on the season you'll be visiting. Every season has its unique charm and not only changes the landscape but also what you’ll be able to do here on the island. Therefore, some insider knowledge into our seasons and how they affect the country and road conditions can be essential.
Summer (June to August): Endless Days and Midnight Sun Magic
If you truly want to have the opportunity to explore every single corner of the island, then you will want to visit during the summer. This is because the nearly 24 hours of daylight will allow you to chase sunsets at midnight after you have spent a whole day exploring.
The weather is relatively mild, between 10 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit and 59 degrees Fahrenheit), and all F-roads in Iceland are usually open, meaning you can get access to romantic Iceland locations that would be completely off limits in winter.

Winter (December to March): Cozy, Magical, and Northern Lights Galore
If you are dreaming of one of those all-inclusive honeymoon packages that don’t cost you an arm and a leg, you’ll want to look into winter destinations and Iceland honeymoon packages. This is the perfect time for hot drinks in private rooms, spending the days wrapped in each other's arms and the nights viewing the magnificent Northern lights.
Winter temperatures are usually around -5 degrees Celsius and 0 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit and 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Even though your access to the country will be significantly more limited, as many of the roads are closed during this period, you can still go around the main routes, such as the Ring Road and the Golden Circle. Just ensure that you (and your vehicle!) are appropriately prepped for our winter conditions.

Shoulder Seasons (April, May, September, and October): The Best of Both Worlds
The shoulder seasons are often forgotten, which, in our opinion, is a shame. Depending on when you decide to visit, these periods are great for getting the best of both worlds. Whether watching the melting snow and the vegetation coming to life or catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights, or exploring an ice cave.
These are also the months with the fewest tourists, making it incredibly peaceful, and it’s also one of the cheapest times to travel around the island (for those trying to honeymoon on a budget).
How Much Does a Honeymoon in Iceland Cost?
As we mentioned before, prices do vary according to the season, so you can get a rough idea. Here's a table with average prices.
Prices are estimates and assume mid-range hotels, a mid-size AWD rental, ~1,600 km driving, and a sample set of activities. Flights are excluded.

|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car (10 days) | $1,320 | $990 | $770 |
| Fuel (≈1,600 km) | $240 | $240 | $240 |
| Hotels (9 nights, mid-range) | $2,280 | $1,780 | $1,390 |
| Activities (sample package for 2) | $870 | $870 | $780 |
| Meals (10 days) | $1,200 | $1,200 | $1,200 |
| Insurance, parking & misc. buffer | $165 | $165 | $165 |
| Estimated total (10 days) | $6,075 | $5,245 | $4,545 |

Why Renting a Car is a Game-Changer for Honeymooners
Renting a car in Iceland is not just about being able to get from point A to point B; it’s about having the freedom to completely customize your honeymoon experience and captaining your own romantic adventure. We explore the various reasons why renting a car is a game-changer for honeymooners:
Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace
Having a rental car allows you to arrange your own schedule and make decisions about where you want to go and when you want to go there without being dictated to by tour itineraries, public transport schedules.
You can now visit that waterfall you always dreamed of checking out. You can stop along the way when something unexpected takes your fancy. If you want to stay a little longer to soak in the hot spring, that’s an option. So, a rental offers you the freedom to enjoy your honeymoon in the way (and time!) you want to.
Privacy and Intimacy on the Open Road
An Icelandic romantic getaway just doesn’t feel the same if you are surrounded by others. A car gives you the option of sharing the road with just your new spouse and no one else. This allows for spontaneity and the ability to focus all your energy on each other without any distractions, while creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Access to Hidden Gems
Many of Iceland’s romantic spots are not on main roads or part of any major tours. As such, the only way you can explore those remote areas and uncover those hidden gems is by having your own rental car.
A Legion of Options for Your Comfort and Convenience
Depending on the season and route you will choose, there are various car options to help make your trip more comfortable. For city travel, you should opt for a compact car, which is easy to park and easier to maneuver, while for off-road adventures, you will need a 4x4. If you are planning on tackling our F-roads, you will only legally be allowed to drive the roads with a 4x4 vehicle.
Most Romantic Self-Drive Routes in Iceland
Rental car + spouse = time to hit the road! The following are some of Iceland’s most romantic self-drive routes you can consider taking:
The Ring Road (aka Route 1)
The Ring Road spans around 1,300 kilometers (830 miles) and is the main highway that wraps in a loop all around the island. If you want to hit all of the popular Icelandic hot spots, this is the road for you.
The average trip time is around 7-10 days, which allows you enough time to stop in Vik near the black sand beaches, in the East Fjords, where you can see the high cliffs, and in Jökulsárlón for a visit to the glacier lagoon.
From sunrise at a glacier lagoon to soaking in a natural hot spring, the options along the Ring Road are limitless.

The Golden Circle
If your time on the island is limited and you are looking for a slightly shorter route but still want to cram in as many of our most famous sights as possible, then the Golden Circle will be the perfect journey for you. At around 300 kilometers (186 miles), this route will take you on a loop from Reykjavik. Famous stops include:
- Thingvellir National Park: With its beautiful rift valleys and historical significance, as this is where the first parliament of Iceland was established, this national park is not to be missed.
- Geysir Geothermal Area: Have you ever seen boiling water erupting meters into the air? Well, this is your opportunity at this famous geyser hot spot (literally!).
- Gullfoss Waterfall: A breathtaking two-tiered waterfall that you can visit in any season.
Hidden Gem: Take the opportunity to add an extra romantic Iceland activity by soaking in the Secret Lagoon or taking a dip in a more secluded part of the Reykjadalur Hot Spring River.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula
This is also the ideal area to explore when your time on the island is limited. This route is known as “Iceland in Miniature,” as it has a little bit of everything Iceland has to offer: black sand beaches, lava fields, impressive glaciers, majestic mountains, and a few quaint fishing villages…
You name it, Snæfellsnes has got it. If you’re a book or movie enthusiast, it is said that the Snæfellsjökull Glacier was the inspiration for Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, making this region even more awe-inspiring.

Driving Tips for Couples Visiting Iceland
Generally, Iceland is safe to drive in; however, with your romantic Iceland vacation, the last thing you would want is for your honeymoon to go south. Here are some tips to help you stay safe on the road:
- Check Weather and Road Conditions: The weather in Iceland can change incredibly fast, so make sure you check it frequently through Vedur.is and other similar weather update apps.
- Rent a 4x4 in Winter: For those visiting during the winter months, opt for a 4x4 vehicle as it can have more power, allowing you to navigate the streets.
- Fuel Up Often: Don’t forget to refuel at every opportunity you get, especially on Highland roads where gas stations can be sparse. Try to avoid having your tank be any less than half full.
- Drive Carefully on Gravel Roads: If you are driving on gravel, slow down to avoid damage to your vehicle or accidents.
- Respect Nature: Always stick to the marked roads, as that can help protect Iceland’s biodiversity and environment.
- Use Headlights at All Times: Yes, even during daylight. This will ensure that you have good visibility, and others can also see you clearly.

What to Pack for a Honeymoon in Iceland
Iceland can be a tricky place to travel to when it comes to packing. Although we are sure you’re more than capable of packing for yourself, here are a few essentials that are specifically needed here in Iceland:
- Waterproof and windproof jackets
- Thermal base layers and underwear
- Comfortable (and waterproof!) hiking boots
- Swimwear for hot springs
- Quick-drying towel (so you’re not lugging wet things around)
- Warm hats (we recommend a beanie), gloves, and scarves
- Sunglasses and sunscreen - yes, even in Iceland and irrespective of season!
- Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
- Power adapters – if needed, Iceland uses the standard European plug
- Chargers and power banks for essential electronic devices (many don’t realise that the cold in Iceland actually makes batteries die quicker)

Final Tips for an Unforgettable Iceland Honeymoon
If this will be your first time on the island, the following tips will be helpful:
- If you are booking for the summer, make sure to book your accommodation and car rentals early, since they book up quickly during our peak season.
- Don’t forget to check the road conditions and weather daily via the Umferdin and Vedur websites, and be flexible enough to adjust your trip schedule as needed (especially when it comes to winter travel).
- Always respect Iceland’s nature, don’t disturb our wildlife, and ensure you stick to marked paths to protect the biodiversity of the island.
- Ensure you have the right vehicle for your planned route and trip itinerary. The last thing you want to deal with on your romantic getaway is being stranded on stuck on the side of the road.
