What’s the difference between a 4x4 and an SUV rental car?
The main difference between a 4x4 and an SUV rental car is the drivetrain. A 4x4 has four-wheel drive, which means that all four wheels are powered at all times. This gives the vehicle better traction and handling in slippery or off-road conditions. An SUV can be either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
In addition to the drivetrain, 4x4s are typically larger and heavier than SUVs, and they have a higher ground clearance. This makes them better suited for off-road driving. SUVs are more comfortable and luxurious than 4x4s, and they have more interior space.

Do I need a 4x4 or SUV rental car in Iceland? Which one should I choose?
Renting a 4x4 in Iceland is not essential if you plan on sticking to the main roads and not going far from the city; however, if you visit Iceland during the winter months or plan on exploring the more remote corners of the island (like the F-roads), it is an absolute must!
When deciding whether to rent an SUV or a 4x4 car rental, you should always consider: where you want to go, how big your travel group is, how much storage space you need and how comfortable you want your travels to be.

How much does it cost to rent a 4x4 / SUV vehicle in Iceland for 1 week?
Renting our most affordable 4-wheel drive vehicle (Dacia Duster) in Iceland for 1 week will cost you around $329 ($47 per day), while renting our most popular SUV (Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hybrid) for 1 week comes to around $363 ($51 per day). Prices may vary depending on the season and the size of the vehicle.

Will I be able to travel all around Iceland with my 4x4 / SUV rental car independently of the season?
4x4 vehicles are actually the ideal choice if you want to venture out of Reykjavik and the Ring Road to discover the hidden wonders of Iceland. While an SUV will allow you to travel in comfort and style, hiring a 4x4 rental car will give you access to the totality of the Land of Fire and Ice.
Please take into account that the famous Icelandic F-roads are only open from June to September and a 4x4 vehicle is absolutely compulsory, so if you happen to travel during the summertime, they will be well within your grasp!

Can I go off road with my 4x4 / SUV rental car?
No, off-road driving is completely forbidden in Iceland due to the damage that car tyres do to the natural habitat. Ignoring regulations can lead to high fines of over 100,000 ISK (around $770) and, in extreme cases, even imprisonment.
