Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? You’re in luck! We’ve already provided answers to the most common questions regarding car rentals in Iceland.

The economy or city car category includes 2-wheel-drive vehicles that are smaller in size and lower in price. They usually comfortably hold up to 4 passengers but it really depends on the amount of luggage, as in most cases they only have room for one large suitcase and a few smaller bags. In terms of transmission, you can find both manual and automatic.

The Toyota Aygo and the Hyundai i10 are the most popular economy or city cars among our customers.
On average, renting an economy or city car in Iceland for 1 week will cost you around $243 ($35 per day), depending on the season and the vehicle choice.

It really depends on what type of trip you have planned and what areas you want to visit. Economy or city cars are perfect for driving around Reykjavik and its surrounding towns during all seasons; however, if you want to go farther and drive around Iceland during winter, even if you stick to safe, asphalt roads like the Ring Road, we recommend an SUV or 4x4 vehicle.

Yes, economy or city cars are unsuitable for dirt tracks and F-roads, and driving on these roads will not only invalidate your insurance but also make you liable to cover any damage to the vehicle’s suspension or undercarriage. As a matter of fact, a 4x4 vehicle is actually compulsory in order to drive on these lanes and not complying with regulations can lead to big fines or even imprisonment.

WHY RENT A CITY CAR IN ICELAND?

  • Hiring a rental vehicle in Iceland is always a good choice! It’s a cost-efficient way to move around the island at your own time and pace. On top of that, public transport in Iceland is very limited outside of the big cities, making it more difficult to explore even the most accessible areas, such as Snaefellsnes Peninsula or the Golden Circle.

  • Our city car rental category includes small, efficient and easy-to-drive vehicles often referred to as compact, economy or sedan automobiles. They are the perfect choice if you want to discover Reykjavik and its surroundings, sticking to the more populated part of the island and not going deep into the Icelandic wilderness.

  • While traveling around Iceland in your rental car you may encounter ‘F-roads’; this is the name given in Iceland to mountain roads leading to the Icelandic Highlands. They are unpaved, gravel roads that will take you off the beaten track and to the more remote areas, where you’ll find most of the island’s natural wonders.

They are only open from June to September and a 4x4 vehicle is absolutely compulsory, so if you happen to travel during the summertime and want to go beyond the city limits, a 4-wheel drive vehicle rental is what you’ll need!

  • Beware! In terms of driving regulations, the Icelandic nation is very proud of its virgin natural landscapes and strives to preserve them, so carving out your own off-road path with your rental vehicle is illegal and punishable with a very big fine or even jail time.

Make sure to keep your headlights and seatbelt on at all times (no matter what the season or time of day is). Want to use your cellphone while behind the wheel? No can do! Make sure your hired vehicle includes a hands-free kit if you don’t want to have to stop every time your phone rings.
