Iceland has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last decade or so. Today there are many more travelers arriving to experience the drama and romance of Iceland’s natural wonders. This unique island way up near the Arctic Circle welcomes travelers from all over the world. And the majority of these visitors will touch down at Keflavík International Airport. Aside from the most incredible landscapes, Iceland has a few other things going for it. The island is ideally placed halfway between Europe and North America. So it lends itself very well to stopover trips. It is about a three-hour flight from London to Reykjavik and another five hours on to New York. Many travelers will enjoy weekend breaks or slightly longer stopovers in Iceland on the route between the two continents.

As such the footfall at Keflavik International has quadrupled in the past decade. In fact, over nine million people used the airport in 2018! Nonetheless, the airport staff has handled this unprecedented increase in visitors extremely well. The airport has even been shortlisted several times for the Airport Council International ASQ Awards for customer service. This is high praise indeed and just goes to show how much hard work has been put in.

    Keflavik Airport Transfer Services

When travelers arrive at the airport KEF, the majority will want to transfer from the airport to Reykjavik city center. There may be some visitors that choose to rent a car directly from the airport or some that opt to head to a hotel outside of the capital. The vast majority though will choose to head into the city and enjoy a few days in Iceland’s charming capital city first.

How you decide to take that transfer will depend largely on your group and your preferences. Next up we will run through the various options open to you including bus transfers, taxis, and hire cars. The journey between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik should take between 35 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and which transfer service you go for.

Shuttle Bus from Keflavik to Reykjavik

For a good balance between convenience and economy catching a Keflavik shuttle bus is generally the best option. There are several companies that run this service and all are perfectly reputable. There are a few that can become complicated if your flight is very delayed and you miss your time slot though.

The journey into Reykjavik from the airport should take approximately 45 minutes. However, due to central Reykjavik having a no bus zone it can take an hour or more for you to reach your hotel. This is because the shuttle bus companies will need to take you first to their bus depot. From there you will transfer to a smaller vehicle for your onward door to door service.

    Keflavik shuttle bus companies

We can recommend the popular shuttle bus service from Flybus. This company has their official bus stops conveniently located right outside the arrival hall. So there is no need to go traipsing off with your luggage in search of a distant bus stop. They also offer very regular service and allow you to purchase a day pass. This means that if your flight is delayed you won’t miss your time slot. You can simply hop on the next bus and away you go. Another option is the Grayline airport transfer.

Flybus also offer a plus bus service with a direct hotel connection or drop off at your nearest bus stop. For transfers from Reykjavik back to the airport there are several convenient central bus stops. You can also opt for a hotel pick up directly depending on your departure time.

How much is a transfer from Keflavik to Reykjavik?

Flybus costs $60 round trip for adults. If you only need a one-way ticket, then the price is $34. Children under 11 can travel for free when accompanied by an adult.

    Keflavik Bus Shuttle Schedules

There are several companies offering shuttle bus transfer between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik. Their exact schedules differ and are also subject to change from season to season. Basically it is a straightforward case of supply and demand. At busier times there are more regular shuttle departures. The service is less frequent in the low season and much more regular in high season.

Flybus has one of the most frequent departure schedules. They offer at least one bus every hour and always about 45 minutes after a flight has landed. You should never have to wait for more than about 30 minutes for the next bus. If you are visiting Iceland on a budget we highly recommend a shuttle bus transfer.

    Taxi Transfers to Reykjavik

Another option open to you is to take a taxi ride into the capital. This will be a more expensive option than catching a shuttle bus but it does have its merits. The cost can be approximately 154€ or $171 USD.

If you are traveling in a group of three-four people without too much luggage it could be worth considering. The price of a taxi would then be a similar price to all four of you buying bus tickets. Otherwise, it is very much more economical to book a bus transfer. One thing you do not need to be concerned about is being overcharged for your taxi. That is not to say that it won’t be expensive, just that Icelandic taxi drivers are very trustworthy.

    Private Transfers Keflavik Airport

If cost isn’t too much of an issue you could also opt for a private transfer booked in advance. This could be good if you are arriving very late at night and just want to get to your hotel quickly. With a private transfer, the driver will be waiting in arrivals straight after the passenger's flights arrive. They will then take them directly to their hotel. This is certainly the most convenient albeit costly option, prices are from 130€ / $145 and up.

Taxi service also works as a keflavik shuttle service between the capital and the international airport

Driving between Keflavik International Airport and your city center hotel should take about 35-40 minutes. This depends a little on traffic but it is certainly the fastest transfer option by far. If you have an important business meeting to get to then a taxi or private transfer is for you.

    Keflavik Airport Car Rental

The final transfer option open to you is to hire a car directly from the airport. We can easily arrange to have your car ready and waiting for you at Keflavik. This is a great option if you would like to get out on your road trip straight away. You may then choose to visit Reykjavik for a few days before your flight home.

If you pick up your rental vehicle at the airport you will be able to load your luggage right in the trunk and hit the road. Some travelers might prefer to bypass the city entirely and head straight out on a self-drive tour. Perhaps heading south to the Golden Circle or even directly west to the see the Northern Lights from the spectacular Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
